What are the benefits of a Little Free Library?

Thinking back to my childhood, reading was a cherished part of my life. Now as an adult, I’m keen to nurture that love of reading in my community.

I have always loved the concept of the Little Free Library and as a woodworker, this was something I could bring to life.

By crafting a DIY Little Free Library, you’re not just building a wooden structure; you’re creating a hub of excitement and curiosity in your neighborhood, where stories can be shared and imaginations can flourish.

While this project does require a touch of patience, it is an incredibly fun build. Let me walk you through the key features and you too can turn this magical concept into reality.

The Design Inspiration Behind my Little Free Library.

A Watherproof Must

This Little Free Library was designed to withstand the elements so weatherproofing protection was the main priority. Such as the roof eave extends generously past the front and back panel and a small awning sits above the door as an extra measure. The door itself is wider than the opening to provide further weather protection. The main structure is a basic and easy to build plywood box, but its up to the roofing, trims and paint to provide the extra jazz…so don’t be afraid to unleash your creativity. Alternatives you can make with this design are the Little Free Pantry, Little Free Seed library, Kindness Rock Library…the possibilities are really endless.

Little Free Libraries Roof Idea

Designing my Little Free Library’s roof was definitely one of the highlights, particularly the pediment where I wanted it to resemble a miniature house. I also decided to lower the pitch of the roof to 35 degrees to maximize interior space for more books across two stories. To seal all the roof edges effectively, I used PVC angle corner moulding.

The small challenge I faced was that the PVC moulding came at a 90-degree angle. To fix this, I clamped the PVC moulding down overnight to gently flatten it into the desired pitch for the roof. By morning, it was easier for me to glue and nail the moulding down.

To Mural or Wall Paper?

Definitely a Mural! For my little free library project, painting a mural was hands-down the best part. I painted lemons across the back wall, adding that extra inviting charm to welcome the community.

This tiny library is small in size but bursting with heart. That’s why I wanted to give it all the creative zing it needs to work its magic!

However, if you’re not keen on painting, don’t stress, there are other alternatives like using wallpaper or, even better, wrapping paper. Remember, it’s all about making it your own. If plain and simple is more your style, that works too!

How much does it cost to build a Little Free Library?

Repurposing for Creativity

If you prefer a low budget approach, get ready to think outside the box! I’ve seen inventive Little Libraries crafted from repurposed microwaves, fridges, old fireplaces, cabinets and more. Embracing alternative materials can be both cost-effective and environmentally friendly, adding a unique touch to your project.

Materials and Costs

When planning your Little Free Library, consider the level of detail and materials you’ll need. Scour local resources like Facebook Marketplace for free quality plywood or salvage leftover materials from home projects to cut down on expenses. I found great deals on acrylic glass from a nearby supplier selling offcuts, which helped keep costs low.

Planning ahead really helped me stay on budget. My total expenditure came in around $100. Of course, this figure reflects my thrifty approach and hands-on effort.

DIY Little Free Library - Budget Calculator

Starting from scratch on this project won’t come cheap! Things can get expensive very quickly, so I’ve put together a handy budget calculator that breaks down all the materials I used. Simply plug in the material cost in your local prices and you’ll get a clearer idea of what your project will cost.
