What are the benefits of a Little Street Library?
Thinking back to my childhood, reading was a cherished part of my life. Now, as an adult, I’m keen to nurture that love of reading in my community.
I have always loved the concept of the Little Streeet Library and, as a woodworker, this was something I could bring to life.
By crafting a DIY little street library, you’re not just building a wooden structure; you’re creating a hub of excitement and curiosity in your neighbourhood, where stories can be shared and imaginations can flourish.
While this project does require a touch of patience, it is an incredibly fun build. Let me walk you through the key features, and you too can turn this magical concept into reality.
The Design Inspiration Behind My Little Street Library.
A Weatherproof Must
This little street library was designed to withstand the elements, so weatherproofing was the main priority. The roof eave extends generously past the front and back panels, and a small awning sits above the door as an extra measure. The door itself is wider than the opening to provide further weather protection.
The main structure is a simple, easy-to-build plywood box, but it’s the roofing, trims, and paint that provide the extra flair — so don’t be afraid to unleash your creativity!
Alternatives you can make with this design include a street pantry, seed library, or kindness rock library. The possibilities are truly endless.
Little Street Libraries Roof Idea
Designing my little street library’s roof was definitely one of the highlights, particularly the pediment — I wanted it to resemble a miniature house. I also decided to lower the pitch of the roof to 35 degrees to maximise interior space, allowing for more books across two stories.
To seal all the roof edges effectively, I used PVC angle corner moulding. The small challenge I faced was that the PVC moulding came at a 90-degree angle. To work around this, I clamped the moulding down overnight to gently flatten it to the desired pitch. By morning, it was easy to glue and nail into place.
Mural or Wallpaper — Which Is Best for Your Street Library?
Definitely a mural! For my little street library project, painting a mural was hands-down the best part. I painted lemons across the back wall, adding an extra touch of charm to welcome the community.
This street library is small in size but bursting with heart — that’s why I wanted to give it all the creative flair it needs to work its magic!
If you’re not keen on painting, don’t stress. There are plenty of alternatives, such as wallpaper or even wrapping paper. Remember, it’s all about making it your own. If plain and simple is more your style, that works too!
How much does it cost to build a Little Street Library?
Repurposing for Creativity
If you prefer a low-budget approach, get ready to think outside the box! I’ve seen inventive street libraries crafted from repurposed microwaves, fridges, old fireplaces, cabinets, and more. Embracing alternative materials can be both cost-effective and environmentally friendly, adding a unique touch to your build.
Materials and Costs
When planning your Little Street Library, it helps to think ahead about the materials you’ll need and the level of detail you want in your build. Checking local resources like Facebook Marketplace is a great way to find free or low‑cost plywood, and salvaging leftover materials from home projects can reduce expenses even further. I was able to source affordable acrylic glass from a nearby supplier selling offcuts, which kept my costs down without compromising quality.
Planning ahead made it much easier to stay within budget. My total spend was around $100–$200, thanks to a thrifty approach, recycled materials, and the fact that I already had all my tools on hand.
How To Install A LIttle Free Library?
Before You Begin
Now that you’re ready to bring the joy of reading to your neighbourhood with your very own Little Street Library, it’s worth taking a moment to plan your installation. Think about whether you’ll handle the setup yourself or bring in a skilled helper for support.
Before you start digging, check in with your local council to see whether any permits are required. Councils often have guidelines around installation depth, stability, and safety — especially in areas affected by strong winds, flooding, or other weather conditions.
Safety always comes first. Contact your local utility authority to locate any underground services, including telecommunications, electrical, plumbing, or natural gas lines. This simple step helps prevent accidents and ensures your installation is safe and compliant.
Free Guide
If you’re eager to take on the installation yourself, I’ve prepared a detailed guide—my free “How to Install a Little Free Library” instruction manual. This guide will walk you through each step of the process, making installation a breeze.
